How do I get my employer to sponsor me as a Registered Apprentice?

Meet with your Supervisor and HR manager and ASK what steps you need to take for them to consider sponsoring you as a registered Apprentice?

If you’re already employed with a company that is not an approved trainer or does not want to become one, reach out to ABC for a full listing of employers who do offer Registered Apprenticeship in your area.

When you complete your Application to the JAC- Joint Apprenticeship Committee, make sure to includes your ACT or Accuplacer and a Letter of Support from your Supervisor/Foreman

Be prepared for the interview, the Interview portion of your application is a large portion of your "score"

When can I start an RA?

Technically you can start while still in HS. Many students have signed RA employment agreements while they are still completing their YA. Your HS must agree and give you authorization along with your parents prior to age 18.

If you do a good job as a YA many YA employers will move you to RA at the conclusion of your YA.

Can I get credit for my YA hours as an RA?

Yes, submit your completed YA job guide, and a credit request letter from your employer sponsor to the apprenticeship committee when submitting your YA application.

What if I'm asked to pay for my "training"?

Most employers will cover this cost, and pay you wages while you to attend training. Some sponsors may pay your wages for the training, but ask you to pay for the courses. Apprentices and Sponsors are eligible to receive a completion award from DWD.
Tips for starting an RA with a new employer (Unsponsored Applicant)

Before leaving your current employer, get a letter of support from your Foreman or HR, describing your work ethic, dedication, and skills you've developed

Pick your Occupation, Seek employers that offer RA.

Add your completed YA job guide to the Apprenticeship Application.

Submit your application to the correct Local Apprenticeship Committee.
